The pet food pouch has become synonymous with convenience for most consumers. These packs can contain a ‘one meal’ portion, are easy to open and highly resource efficient compared with cans. They tend to dominate the shelves now for wet foods for cats and dogs, providing not only convenience but excellent barrier properties and shelf impact.
There is still a considerable market for single portion trays made from rigid aluminium foil and these generally use flexible alufoil lids which provide excellent barrier protection and are easy open, with superb sealability to maintain freshness and moisture over long periods.
For dry foods larger flexible plastics pouches and bags are now the norm. These often incorporate re-seal features for ease of storage. Once again the excellent barrier properties offered by flexible materials keep these dry foods in perfect condition and offer excellent resource efficiency compared with other formats, such as cartons, which are prone to damage and are much harder to reseal once opened.
